The Church of Saint-Martin in Chelles was classified as a historic monument in 1862. Anyone choosing Chelles as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and History
Its apses and northern pillars date from around 1140; the church also contains frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries.
The Château de Chelles also dates back a long way: it was built in the 12th century and completely rebuilt in the 15th century. A Merovingian necropolis with almost 2,000 graves was discovered in the park of the Château de Chelles in 1863.
The Relais Brunehaut contains a fully renovated 14th-century mill. The mills ground wheat as well as poppy seeds and beech nuts to obtain oil. A Gothic portal can still be seen at the Tour de Chelles, in the former wall of the feudal manor house.
In 1836, the ruins of a former chapel in the hamlet of Bérogne still included a Romanesque portal and several Romanesque arcades.
Out and About Throughout the Year
The GR 12 long-distance hiking trail passes through Chelles and runs from Amifontaine (Aisne) to Saint Jean aux Bois (Oise). Fêtes et Loisirs de Chelles worked with the municipality on a programme that included, among other things, hikes and cycling excursions.
The Nocturne de Chelles is organised jointly every year in the first half of October. Place André Leroy in Chelles is designated as a picnic area.
Nature and Local Events
Chelles and Bérogne lie along a bird migration corridor following the ru de Vandy as far as the Aisne.
The annual spring event in Chelles includes a flower market in support of the schools. The 2025 edition of the spring event in Chelles featured an exhibition of local products for the fourth year.
