Vauxaillon is located at the western entrance to the Chemin des Dames. At the edge of the village, along the railway line, lies the French military cemetery of Vauxaillon. The French military necropolis is the burial place of 2,078 French war casualties; most of the First World War casualties buried in the Vauxaillon cemetery are soldiers who fell in the battles on the Chemin des Dames. The cemetery is freely accessible from sunrise to sunset.

History and Trails

Several events in military history are connected with the hills and promontories around Vauxaillon. On 16 April 1917, the 61st Battalion of Senegalese Tirailleurs stormed Mont des Singes south of the Ailette Canal. The Vauxaillon-Laffaux promontory was a target of the 1st Colonial Army Corps during the offensive on the Chemin des Dames in April 1917. Heavy fighting took place at Mont des Singes near Vauxaillon in September 1918, involving the 370th US Infantry Regiment. During the Battle of La Malmaison, Mont des Singes fell to the French Army.

The “Autour de Vauxaillon” walking trail passes the Église Saint Médard de Vauxaillon.

Nature

The Marais de Longchamp in Vauxaillon is a wetland on a former poplar plantation. It is being ecologically restored to recreate a remarkable sloping peatland site.

At the Marais de Longchamp, the Sentier de la demoiselle features information boards; it was established as part of an educational natural area. An insect hotel is incorporated into the Sentier de la demoiselle.

The ecological measures at the Marais de Longchamp enabled Orchis négligé, Ophioglosse and a community of wetland invertebrates to appear, including the uncommon Epeire alsine spider.
