Culture

The abbey church of the Abbaye de Saint-Michel-en-Thiérache has an Italian-influenced Baroque façade from the 17th century. The Romanesque cloister contains six frescoes depicting the life of Saint Benedict.

The Musée de la vie rurale et forestière is located in the agricultural outbuildings on the abbey grounds. Since 17 September 2003, it has held the designation “Musée de France”. The former Benedictine abbey of Saint-Michel-en-Thiérache is classified as a historic monument.

Nature

The Artoise flows through the Forêt de Saint-Michel. It was awarded the title “Rivière sauvage” because of the purity of its water and the diversity of its fauna.

The Forêt de Saint-Michel offers historical circular trails as well as horse-riding and hiking trails. The “La forêt de Saint-Michel” route is a walking trail that starts in Saint-Michel.

Events

The Festival de l'abbaye de Saint-Michel comprises five full Sundays of Baroque music at the beginning of summer. The Festival de musique ancienne et baroque in Saint-Michel takes place on five Sundays from June to July.
