Landscape

Mont-Saint-Jean is situated on a plateau. The municipality covers 336 hectares with a fairly dense bocage landscape of meadows surrounded by hedges, pollarded willows and thorn bushes.

Culture and History

The present-day Church of Saint John the Baptist in Mont-Saint-Jean was rebuilt in a single construction campaign; the date 1748 on its west façade probably marks the completion of the work. Its brick walls stand on a sandstone base, with traces of decoration made from glazed bricks. Partially visible traces of geometric and floral paintings have been preserved on the ceiling. The church tower houses the Anne bell, which was cast in 1559 by the monks of Bonnefontaine Abbey.

The memorial to those who fell in the First World War in Mont-Saint-Jean is shaped like a pile of rocks. It is crowned by a bare tree trunk bearing a Croix de guerre.

Townscape

The townscape includes half-timbered and earthen houses, most of which date from the first half of the 19th century.

The present structure of the washhouse in Mont-Saint-Jean probably dates from the late 19th century. It is the only one of the aforementioned communal washhouse buildings still preserved in the municipality. In the canton of Aubenton, it is one of the few washhouses still standing that have retained their original construction and roofing.

Nature

The protected surroundings of the Ruisseau du Moulin stream are home to numerous noteworthy plant and fish species.

Cycling

The La Haye d'Aubenton mountain-biking route passes through Mont-Saint-Jean. The route is 23 km long and is listed as taking 3 hours and 20 minutes.
