Culture and history
The Church of Saint-Hilaire in L'Île-d'Elle was completely rebuilt between 1847 and 1852 and consecrated on 22 August 1852. It is an example of neoclassical architecture in the Vendée and has a Latin-cross floor plan.
At Le Gouffre, the Vendée crosses the Canal de Vix via a dressed-stone aqueduct. The hydraulic works at Le Gouffre were built in the mid-17th century and remodelled in the 19th century.
The history of the town also includes L'Île-d'Elle's basket-weaving tradition. At the end of the 19th century, it developed from the household production of “bourgnassous” into a craft and, in part, industrial trade. The former tileworks and brickworks on the Route de La Rochelle was one of the most important industrial enterprises in the municipality of L'Île-d'Elle.
