Culture and history
The Church of Saint-Benoît is a small Romanesque church from the 12th century. Its side portal on the southern side has a round-arched archivolt with a star frieze. Wall paintings from the 16th century have been preserved; they depict the “Dict des Trois morts et des Trois vifs”. The church also houses statues from the 15th to the 18th century; all of them were added to the inventory of the Bâtiments de France on 22 June 1982.
Notre-Dame d'Athenay in Chemiré-le-Gaudin is a building from the first Romanesque period, constructed between the 11th and 12th centuries. Its southern chapel contains a carved panel from the 16th century depicting the Adoration of the Magi.
The portal of the Château de la Sauvagère is classified as a historic monument and combines dark Roussard stone with light limestone from Bernay.
The Château de la Suze-sur-Sarthe and the Château de Malicorne-sur-Sarthe are located near Chemiré-le-Gaudin. The wider regional area also includes the Château de Sourches and the historic site of Abbaye Saint-Pierre de la Couture.

Tradition
An annual procession to the Virgin takes place in Athenay; traditionally, it is scheduled for the first Saturday in July.
