Two-thirds of the municipality of Thouaré-sur-Loire consists of natural or agricultural land; the town lies on the banks of the Loire. By TER, Thouaré-sur-Loire is seven minutes from Nantes SNCF railway station.

The Vallon du Gobert marks the boundary between Thouaré-sur-Loire and Mauves-sur-Loire. It is crossed by the stream of the same name, which flows into the Loire, and together with the Vallon de la Seilleraye upstream and the Boire de Mauves downstream, it forms a continuous series of wetlands and marshes. The Vallon du Gobert is accessible exclusively as part of organized excursions.

South of the town center of Thouaré-sur-Loire lies the Demeure, dite château de La Picauderie, which borders the Loire directly. It was built in 1773, modeled on a country house from the Nantes area known as a “folie nantaise”. The Château de Thouaré estate covers 7 hectares on the banks of the Loire.

History

Surrounded by moats, the Château de Thouaré has a history dating back to the 10th century; during this period, a medieval motte surrounded by ditches was built. The moats bear witness to the medieval origins of the Château de Thouaré.

The Ponts de Thouaré were built between 1879 and 1882. They consist of two successive metal bridges over two arms of the Loire, separated by the Île de la Chesnaie, and connect Thouaré-sur-Loire on the right bank of the Loire with Saint-Julien-de-Concelles on the left bank.

The historic Port de Thouaré was one of the most important ports on the upper Loire until the 19th century.

On the Way

The Bords de Loire route leads to the small Pont de la Chalandière, also called Pont de l'Arche, one of the oldest structures in Thouaré-sur-Loire. It invites visitors to cycle along the river and use the route for longer excursions.

The structure is located on the de la Sauterelle towpath, about 800 meters upstream from the Ponts de Thouaré on the right bank of the Loire. Its stone arch over the Chalandière stream may date back to the Middle Ages.

In the Vallon du Gobert, the bridge traditionally referred to as the “pont romain” actually dates from the Middle Ages.
