Rougé: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The red soil of Rougé is due to clay that was turned red by the abundant iron ore. This geological feature is also connected to the history of the town: the iron ore was probably processed by Celtic and Gallo-Roman metalworkers.

Culture and history

In the town centre, behind the town hall, is the 16th-century Manoir de l’Orgerais with its chapel. The estate is privately owned, but the chapel is visible from the road. The history of Rougé also includes the de Rougé family, which has been documented in the region since at least the 12th century. It shaped the town by building a castle and making donations to the nearby Melleray, Béré and Teillay abbeys.

The Notre-Dame de la Salette complex consists of an altar and an oratory. A depiction of Notre-Dame de la Salette, surrounded by children, is located in a glazed niche. The Notre-Dame de la Salette Calvary used to be visited during processions, Rogation Days and on Ascension Day.

North of Rougé, a statue of Saint Joseph stands in the Bois de Saint-Joseph. It depicts him carrying the infant Jesus. The former Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul church is also part of the local tradition: two paintings were created for it in 1856.

Nature

The former Moulin de la Rouelle is home to a 1.5-hectare departmental nature area with a pond and its surroundings. Connected to it is the 16.8-hectare Bois de la Houssaye woodland, also called St-Joseph, which is bordered by the Brutz stream. Fifteen bat species have been identified in the Bois de la Houssaye nature area. The hazel dormouse is ecologically significant there; it is considered a rare species in the Loire-Atlantique département.

Trails and leisure activities

The Sentier Les Pierres Rouges circular trail is 12 kilometres long. The hike takes three hours and is rated easy. The circular route is also considered easy for mountain biking and horse-riding excursions. It passes through the Brutz Valley as well as heathland, bocage and long wooded sections. Its surroundings include a leisure centre, a picnic area and a skate park. The starting point for the circular trail is the car park at Rougé’s former railway station; signs for the Voie Verte point the way there.

Swin Golf des Grées has an 18-hole Swin Golf course in Rougé. The facility also offers paintball, bicycle hire, archery, footgolf and disc golf.

The Centre équestre de Rougé offers group or individual lessons, rides, horse treks and holiday courses. The facilities include rides with horses and ponies; visitors can tour the stable, groom horses and use the riding arena.
