La Chevrolière: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Maison des Pêcheurs features three museum exhibition areas that trace the history and daily life of the “Passis”, the inhabitants of Passay, from 1900 to 1960.

Culture and history

The aquarium at the Maison des Pêcheurs showcases the fish and aquatic flora of Lac de Grand Lieu in 15 freshwater tanks. A 12-metre-high panoramic observation tower offers views of Lac de Grand Lieu and its protected reserve.

Passay is the only fishing village on Lac de Grand-Lieu; fishing has been practised there since the Middle Ages. Today, seven professional fishermen continue this fishing tradition. The Maison des Pêcheurs offers guided tours throughout the year, children's workshops on Wednesdays or during school holidays, educational workshops for groups, and activities relating to temporary exhibitions.

Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in La Chevrolière can put the town, together with Passay and Lac de Grand Lieu, on their list of destinations.

Nature

Access to the ornithological observatory is only possible as part of a guided tour with a warden from the nature reserve. A 300-metre-long path then leads through reed beds and meadows to the observatory. It is equipped with telescopes and binoculars and is located between Lac de Grandlieu and a wet meadow that provides favourable living conditions for birdlife.

Hiking

The Circuit Aquaterra is a 14.5 km moderately difficult circular hiking trail starting and ending in La Chevrolière. It passes through bocage landscapes and vineyards in the La Chevrolière countryside.

The Circuit de Passay runs along the banks of the Ognon and leads to Passay, a traditional fishing village.

Local insights

Passay’s summer and winter harbours are directly accessible from the Place des Pêcheurs. Passay offers one of the few freely accessible views of Lac de Grand-Lieu – in summer and winter alike.

Dominique Guillet, a professional fisherman on Lac de Grand-Lieu in La Chevrolière, offers live or prepared eels, boiled Louisiana crayfish, pike, pike-perch, carp and bream, as well as fish for stocking ponds.
