Fresnay-en-Retz showcases its natural landscape on the Circuit Loyau. The 6.9-kilometre walking and hiking trail (Sentier de Promenade et Randonnée) is classified as very easy and can be accessed on foot or by bicycle. It starts and ends at the car park by the Fresnay-en-Retz town hall and passes through the freshwater marshland with its peaceful canals, reed beds and rich biodiversity. The Circuit Loyau is suitable for families and all audiences and is accessible year-round; however, walking the route is not recommended after heavy rain.

Culture and History

Today’s Théâtre de Fresnay was converted from a former school into a small performance venue. For more than 20 years, theatre groups such as CabaRetz Théâtre have performed plays there.

The Église Notre-Dame de Fresnay-en-Retz was rebuilt in 1801 after the former church was destroyed by Republican troops in 1794. Its black marble high altar dates from 1717, while the altarpiece is decorated with Corinthian columns made of black marble. The church also contains statues of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Sebastian. Outside worship and ceremony times, the Église Notre-Dame de Fresnay-en-Retz can be visited free of charge; a guided visit is available during the European Heritage Days in September.

On the Way

The “De Nantes à la mer à vélo par les marais” cycling route passes through Fresnay-en-Retz and Saint-Cyr-en-Retz after the Étang de Machecoul.

In the vicinity of Fresnay-en-Retz, the Manoir de la Noë Briord can be seen while hiking along the Circuit Le Bocage, starting from the nearby information board in Saint-Cyr-en-Retz; from there, among other things, there is a beautiful view of the Marais Breton Vendéen.
