The Anse de Sciotot stretches for 4 kilometres from Cap de Flamanville to Cap du Rozel and is a haven for a wide variety of species. These include numerous seabird species that breed there or stop to rest during migration. The GR 223 coastal path crosses the bay and offers hikers exceptional views of the English Channel. The path, also known as the “Sentier des douaniers”, is 80 kilometres long and runs from Plage d’Urville-Nacqueville in the north to the dunes of Surtainville in the south. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was used to monitor the coast in order to prevent or curb smuggling with the Anglo-Norman Islands.

Coast and nature

La Roche à Coucou is a natural rocky spur made of Armorican sandstone that rises 135 metres above the Anse de Sciotot. From there, the panoramic view stretches from Cap du Rozel to Cap de Flamanville. Marked paths at La Roche à Coucou lead through flowering heathland, Norman bocage, steep cliffs and sandy beaches.

Cap du Rozel is a rocky promontory 130 metres high, overlooking the Anse de Sciotot and Surtainville Beach. At its summit stands the statue Maris Stella, also known as “Vierge des marins”, a work by Joseph Bataille. Footprints of Neanderthals have been preserved in the ground at Cap du Rozel; they are associated with regular human settlement around 80,000 years ago.

Paths and history

The very difficult “Entre terre et mer – No. 166” hiking trail is 23.6 kilometres long and takes 5 hours and 40 minutes. As a circular route, it passes near the ruins of an old chapel.
