History

Montaigu-en-Argouges was part of a line of defence built to protect the Norman border with Brittany. The Argouges family was mentioned among the French nobility in 1219.

The “Martyrs of Argouges” are considered to be three priests persecuted during the French Revolution: Gilles Berthelot (1759–1795), Joseph Deloget (1758–1796), and Gilles Gosselin (1762–1795).

A former eagle lectern was partially reused as part of a pulpit; the eagle is attached to the railing of this pulpit. The work “La Descente de croix” is a copy of a painting by Rubens from 1612 for Notre-Dame d’Anvers Cathedral.
