Pierres reveals its history through specific sites and finds. The tombstone of Georges de Banville, who died in 1697, is located in the choir of the Church of Saint-Pierre; the stone is supported by two angels. The church also contains a rustic Norman sacristy cabinet, as well as a chalice and a paten. The sacristy cabinet, chalice and paten were listed as protected objects on 6 September 1984. Numerous polished and worked stones were discovered in the Pierres area in the 1960s. Gallo-Roman pottery, roof tiles and terra sigillata ceramics were also found in Pierres.
History
The site's history of lordship is also closely connected with its Norman past. In 1204, Hascoldus de Soligny, a supporter of the English during the incorporation of the Duchy of Normandy into the Kingdom of France, was dispossessed by the Crown of his fief in Pierres. The lordship of Pierres became a royal farm, known as a “fief-ferme”; this fief was granted to Richard de Rouvencestre in 1210. Several generations succeeded one another at the head of the Pierres estate until 1784. That year, Charlotte de Banville, Lady of Pierres and wife of Louis Cyprien Aimé de Corday d’Arclais, died.
