Culture and History

The Église Saint-Ouen was built in the Romanesque style with round-arched openings. Its porch dates from the 16th century, while the bell tower dates to 1761. Inside is an exceptionally carved altarpiece with Corinthian pilasters, fire baskets, curved panels, and statues of Saint Joachim and Saint Ouen. The church's south transept also houses the processional banner Saint Sébastien et Saint Ouen.

A processional banner listed as a protected object bears the inscriptions “La Charité du Pré d'Auge” and “L'église du Pré d'Auge”. The main altarpiece with statues, tabernacle, tiered structure, and doors is protected as a movable object under the Monuments historiques. The 17th-century Christ on the Cross is attributed to the potter Joachim Vattier.

Of the four brotherhoods founded in Le Pré-d'Auge, the Confrérie du Saint-Sacrement et de la Charité still exists today; it was founded in 1792. Ceramics are also part of the area's history: since the 13th century, a significant centre of ceramic production developed in the Le Pré-d'Auge area and the lexovienne region, with numerous pottery and tile-making businesses.

Landscape and Tradition

The Château de la Rivière-Pré-d'Auge is an 18th-century building made of Saint-Jean bricks and flint and is considered part of the Saint-Méen ritual site. The Saint-Méen spring and the Saint-Méen oak stand halfway up a slope in a bocage meadow within a circular enclosure.

A healing ritual is associated with the Saint-Méen site: pilgrims wash at the spring and then attach pieces of fabric to the oak.
