History

The first stone church in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult was built in 1185. The Église Saint-Germain was partially rebuilt between 1631 and 1635. In August 1944, it was almost completely destroyed; only the choir survived the explosion. The memorial chapel of the First World War was inaugurated on 8 October 1922.

Culture

The Sanctuaire du Sacré-Cœur, also known as the Sanctuaire du Divin Médecin, is located in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult. Today, 146 ex-votos associated with the sanctuary can be seen in the rebuilt church of the Sanctuaire du Sacré-Cœur. The first solemn annual celebration of the Sacred Heart took place as a pilgrimage on 19 June 1903.

The Manoir de la Hiaule is a private heritage site to discover in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult. The historic Chapelle de Gouvy was built in December 1650, blessed on 9 February 1651, and has since disappeared. According to legend, the White Lady appeared silently beside a wall right by the gate of the Manoir de Gouvy, about two kilometres from the town centre. The tombstones are among the sights to discover in Saint-Germain-du-Crioult.
