History
The Caen Memorial presents the history of the Second World War through an immersive presentation and exceptional archival documents. The Gardens of Remembrance at the Caen Memorial commemorate resistance fighters and Allied soldiers who fell in Normandy. Memorial ceremonies commemorating the Allied landings are held there every year around 6 June.
The tomb of William the Conqueror remains in the choir of the church of the Abbaye-aux-Hommes. The Abbaye-aux-Dames, the former Benedictine abbey of the Trinity of Caen, was founded around 1059–1060 by William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. At the Abbaye-aux-Hommes, the “Norman Worlds” exhibition explores the history of the abbey under William the Conqueror and his successors from 1066 to 1204.
Museums and Exhibitions
The Musée des Beaux-Arts is located in Caen Castle and is considered one of France’s leading museums of 16th- and 17th-century European painting. Its programme includes temporary exhibitions and family workshops.
The Musée de Normandie presents the history of the population throughout Normandy through important archaeological and ethnographic collections, from prehistory to the great migrations of the early Middle Ages.
Nature
The Jardin des Plantes offers guided tours for groups and people with disabilities on request. The Jardin botanique de Caen received accreditation as a “Jardin botanique de France et des pays francophones” in 1997.
Visiting
The grounds of Caen Castle are freely accessible every day from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The historic areas of the Abbaye-aux-Hommes are open to visitors, including the cloister and exhibitions on the history of the site. A visit to Caen Castle includes privileged access to the keep and the Queen Matilda Tower.
The Musée de Normandie can be reached from the SNCF railway station by tram in 10 minutes; the stop is Château-Quatrans.
