Barbery: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Barbery's history includes the former Notre-Dame de Barbery Abbey, a Cistercian abbey founded in 1177. Its abbey church was consecrated in 1246.

Culture

Today, part of the façade and several buildings of Barbery Abbey remain. Barbery Abbey is privately owned and can be seen from the public road. The statue “Vierge à l'Enfant” most probably comes from the choir of Barbery Abbey and dates from the first half of the 18th century.

Barbery's medieval and modern tileworks are also part of the area's history; they were in operation from the 14th to the 18th century. Roof tiles from Barbery were often used for roofs in Caen. They were purchased for Caen Castle in the 15th century, as well as for Falaise Castle.

In Saint-Pierre Church in Barbery, there is a statue of the “Vierge à l'Enfant” in the choir on the south wall. At Saint-Pierre Church, only the decorated portal of the nave is original; the church was rebuilt over the centuries. Saint-Martin Church in Mesnil-Touffray (Barbery) was rebuilt after being partially destroyed in the 18th century. Its structural framework consists of stone from Quilly.

Nature

Barbery lies on the edge of the Cinglais Forest. The “Terre, eau et patrimoine en Cingal” route leads towards Barbery Abbey and then into the Cinglais Forest. It is an approximately 4.5-hour hike through the Calvados area along signposted and well-maintained paths.
