Auberville: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Nature

The Falaises des Vaches Noires feature a characteristic badland morphology with a succession of ravines and rocky spurs. They date back to the Jurassic period and are known for their geological and palaeontological richness; dinosaur remains have also been discovered there. Auberville has viewpoints overlooking the Falaises des Vaches Noires and the English Channel.

Culture

The Boucle Notre-Dame is a 6 km hiking trail that combines religious heritage, country lanes and views of the Falaises des Vaches Noires. Its longer variant starts at Auberville Church, which was built from Caen stone in the 12th century and later remodelled in the 17th century. The trail passes Auberville’s war memorial, dedicated to the village’s children who died in the First World War.

The façade of Notre-Dame Church features a bell gable with two openings and two bronze bells cast in 1759. The interior includes a wooden nave ceiling, exposed beams, a 17th-century altarpiece, a 17th-century painting and a 17th-century statue of Saint Mark. The altarpiece depicts The Meal at Simon the Pharisee’s House.

Hiking

A 13 km long major loop, taking approximately three hours, leads from Auberville along a section of the GR 223 towards Villers-sur-Mer, then continues via Vaches Noires Beach and Houlgate, returning to Auberville via the 100 Steps. On the longer loop, you reach an orientation table overlooking the Dives estuary and the beaches of Cabourg, Varaville and Merville-Franceville-Plage. Tide times should be checked for the beach section of the loop, so that you are not caught out by an incoming tide.

The Sentier nature des Vaches Noires is a 1.7 km nature trail in Auberville for exploring on foot. It runs through bocage meadows and valleys where vegetation has reclaimed some former structures dating from the Second World War. After the wooded section, the trail offers a panorama of the sea.

From the beach side, the Villers-sur-Mer tourist office organises discovery tours of the Falaises des Vaches Noires throughout the year.
