Longues-sur-Mer is known for its coastal cliffs, which reach heights of up to 70 metres. A typically Norman bocage landscape stretches south of the town.

Coast and Nature

The grounds of the Batterie de Longues cover 26.62 hectares, are protected and open to the public. They consist of a 65-metre-high plateau that continues along the sea as a marl-limestone cliff. Erosion has created chaotic accumulations of large limestone blocks there.

The grounds of the Batterie de Longues provide a habitat for several rare bird species; bats use the blockhouses in particular as wintering quarters. The fire-control post has been made accessible to people with reduced mobility by means of a footbridge and suitable ground surfacing.

Culture and History

The church of Fontenailles is listed as a Monument historique; it was listed by decree dated 16 May 1927.

Longues Abbey is a Benedictine abbey and provides an exceptional insight into Norman religious life in the Middle Ages. The areas presented to visitors include the gardens beside the restored chancel and the medieval guesthouse. Restoration work enabled the chancel of the former church of Longues Abbey to reopen to the public in 2022.

A guided tour of Longues Abbey includes the outdoor areas of the abbey buildings, the monks’ refectory and the garden.

The parish church of Saint-Pierre was built in the first half of the 12th century; the bell tower was added in the 13th century. Following the bombing in 1944, the foundations and the bell tower remain.

Routes and Connections

The Vélomaritime, also known as EuroVelo 4, reaches the coast at the batteries of Longues; from there, a Greenway leads to Arromanches-les-Bains. From Longues-sur-Mer, it also provides a 12-kilometre connection to Bayeux railway station.
