History
Terril 34 is a conical spoil heap created by the operation of Fosse No. 3 of the Compagnie des mines de Ligny-Auchy between 1862 and 1950. The spoil heap has been preserved and is part of the series of spoil heaps marking the western entrance to the mining basin. Terril 32 also belongs to this series. Terril 31 is located next to Terril 32 and has been preserved.

Hiking
Ligny-lès-Aire has a hiking trail called the Via Francigena. The GR 145 Via Francigena passes through Ligny-lès-Aire. The “Sentier des Châteaux et Cressonnières” circular trail also passes through Ligny-lès-Aire. On this circular trail, hikers pass between two spoil heaps after the Rue du Transvaal; the Église St-Pierre is a point of interest along the route.
The “Un terril à la campagne” hike in Ligny-lès-Aire is 14.42 km long, moderately difficult, and takes an average of 4 hours 25 minutes. It starts and ends at the Église de Ligny-lès-Aire. The hike leads to the entrance of the spoil heap and includes a viewpoint on the ascent.
Nature
The “Monts et Campagnes” route passes through Ligny-lès-Aire and is marked with yellow, white-and-red, and yellow-and-red trail markings. It runs between the spoil heaps of Fléchinelle, Estrée-Blanche, and Mont-Pouret, as well as agricultural plots and a bocage landscape.
