Laventie: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Église Saint-Vaast was built on the site of the church that was bombed and burned down in 1914. Its foundation stone was laid on 11 October 1925, and it was solemnly blessed on 28 April 1929.

Culture

The Église Saint-Vaast is a neo-Gothic building designed by the architect Cordonnier, with three naves and two transepts. Its bell tower is 68 metres high, or 74 metres including the rooster. The Cavaillé-Coll-Mutin organ dates from 1903, was restored in spring 1999, and is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.

The Église Saint-Pierre de Fauquissart is located on Rue du Bois and was built according to plans by the Lille architect Louis Marie Cordonnier. It replaced a church built in 1902 that had been destroyed during the First World War. The Laventie area also has eleven chapels built or renovated after the First World War, as well as six calvaries.

Memorial sites

There are seven military cemeteries in the municipality of Laventie, including six British and one German cemetery.

Burials at Fauquissart Military Cemetery began in November 1914; 102 English soldiers rest there. Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard opened in November 1914; 806 people rest there, including 800 Britons, two Canadians, two Indians and two Germans. Rue du Bacquerot n°1 Military Cemetery was opened by the Indian Corps in November 1914; 635 people rest there, including 484 Britons, 144 Hindus and seven Germans.

Rue plate (13th) London Graveyard, also known as Red House cemetery, contains 196 graves, including 168 English and 28 Australian graves. Rue Masselot German Military Cemetery is a German military cemetery; 1,978 people rest there. Forty-three people rest at Euston Post Cemetery, including 42 Englishmen and one German.

Nature

At Parc Cœur de Ville, paths run along a drainage ditch to a municipal fishing pond. Parc Cœur de Ville offers families a fun orienteering course and is open all year round.

As part of the Téléthon, the four-kilometre “Sport Nature et Patrimoine” walking route was offered in Laventie, allowing visitors to discover the local heritage.

History and landscape

Historically, Laventie was known in the Pays de l’Alloeu for cherries, which were called “L’alloeu” in Artois.
