Merris was rebuilt after its complete destruction during the First World War. The reconstruction was carried out creatively and uniformly, making the town an example of the cultural heritage of post-First World War reconstruction.

Culture

The Saint Laurent Church was officially opened for worship on 21 April 1929, after three years of construction. Its stained-glass windows were created by the glass artist Jacques Gruber. A guided tour focusing on its classified stained-glass windows is planned for Merris Church.

The Maison du souvenir is a small museum in the former chapel of the Internat Familial. The heritage trail also includes the Internat Familial, which was built as a hospice from 1888 onwards and later also used as an orphanage.

The Borne Vauthier stands at the crossroads of Rue de Strazeele and Rue Neuve. It symbolises the front line of 18 July 1918, the beginning of the recapture of the area.

The Relais de la Dentelle school in the countryside around Merris continues to offer training in lace-making.

Trails and Remembrance

The Chemin de la mémoire 14/18 is 18 km long in total, of which 12 km run through Merris and 6 km through Vieux-Berquin. The section in Merris consists of three different circular routes and includes seven information panels. The panels can be reached by car, on foot or by bicycle.

Landscape

Merris is situated on the rise of land marking the transition between the Monts de Flandre and the Lys plain. The heritage trail also includes the very large Calvary cross, which offers panoramic views of the Monts de Flandre.

Local life

The L'Échappée Belle food truck is on Merris village square on Saturday evenings.
