Erquinghem-Lys has an easy promenade that takes 25 to 30 minutes. It leads to the Halte nautique erquinghemmoise. Along the promenade, visitors can observe ducks, coots, grey herons, and a pair of swans with their young. From an elevated point along the walking route, the Monts de Flandre and numerous church towers can be seen.

Culture

The Musée de la Cité d'Ercan is open on Sunday afternoons from March to the end of October, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is free; groups can visit on weekdays by prior arrangement.

The Chapelle Mésséan, also known as Notre Dame des 7 Douleurs, was rebuilt in 1931. The plans for the Église Saint Martin were drawn up by the architect Afchain; the stained-glass windows were made by Chigot de Limoges. The Erquinghem-Lys et son Histoire association concludes its season with an annual exhibition around 11 November.

History

Around the 10th century, a fortified position stood between the road to Estaires and the Lys. It was stormed and completely demolished in 1214 by the troops of Philippe Auguste. Vauban had the Château d'Erquinghem dismantled in 1678; in 1814, the château was completely demolished.

The Ancienne usine de blanchiment Mahieu specialised in bleaching textiles and belonged to the textile giant Mahieu.
