Culture
The Bastion de la Reine dates from 1538 and still has underground rooms. The Porte de Mons dates from 1628. The Pont des Dames lock regulated the water in the fortification ditches and made a defensive flooding system possible.
The Collégiale Saint-Nicolas was elevated to collegiate church status in 1534 in the Late Gothic style and has been classified as a Monument historique since 10 February 1913. A funeral service was held there on 2 August 1461 in the presence of Louis XI, Philippe le Bon, Charles le Téméraire, and significant sections of the French, Burgundian and Dutch nobility.
The Musée d'histoire et d'archéologie has held the designation Musée de France since 17 September 2003. It preserves regional archaeological collections containing Gallic coins, Gallo-Roman and barbarian jewellery, and bronze statuettes. The museum is accessible exclusively during the European Heritage Days or by appointment.
The tourist information office is located in the Maison du Chanoine, 41 place du Général Leclerc. It is one of three points of contact for the intermunicipal tourist office.
Nature
The Circuit du Camp de César is marked with arrows, signposts and coloured markings. A 3.7-kilometre section of the Circuit du Camp de César is suitable for families. The circular route is 11.7 kilometres long and starts at the church car park in Avesnes-sur-Helpe.
Regional cuisine
Boulette d'Avesnes is a cone-shaped cheese from the region, named after Avesnes-sur-Helpe. The Confrérie de la Boulette d'Avesnes et de la Flamiche au Maroilles was founded in 1997 to ensure compliance with the artisanal production of this cheese according to local tradition.
