Templeuve: Holiday apartments and houses

History and culture

A mill at the site of the Moulin de Vertain has been documented since 1328. After being completely destroyed by a war-related fire in 1616, it was rebuilt and ceased flour production in 1908.

The Château Baratte is a Neo-Renaissance-style building constructed according to plans by the architect Arthur Leclercq and completed in 1860. The Church of Saint Martin has Romanesque origins; several bluestone columns with capitals in the Tournai style have been preserved. The three eastern choirs, the transept and the construction of the bell tower date from the 15th and 16th centuries; the classical portal with pediment dates from the 18th century. The church is currently closed due to dry rot infestation.

The Pierre de la sorcière is associated with the local legend that witches were put on display before their execution on the rectangular stone marked with a tau. Witch trials took place in the village in the 16th and 17th centuries. In fact, it is a paving stone that served as a boundary marker between different plots of land.

In the 2000s, a colony of long-eared bats with notched ears lived in the nave of the Church of Saint Martin; it was described as unique in France.

The Moulin de Vertain offers guided tours on Sunday afternoons from the beginning of May to the end of September, according to a calendar established each year. It is also open to the public on Heritage Open Days; outside these times, guided tours can be arranged for groups upon request.

Nature and trails

The grounds of the Château Baratte, with their centuries-old trees, include a large play area for children as well as a place for adults to go for walks.

The Totemus cycling route “In the footsteps of the mythical cobblestones” begins at Templeuve-en-Pévèle station, is 34 kilometres long and includes 8 cobblestone sections.

The Totemus walking treasure hunt “Heritage and legends” is 6.9 kilometres long, takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, and begins at Templeuve-en-Pévèle station on Place de la Gare.

Geographical location

The municipal area lies near the Marque Valley and the Ennevelin wetlands; the northern part consists predominantly of a type 1 ZNIEFF and a type 2 ZNIEFF.
