Geographical Setting

Moulin-Mage lies at the foot of Montalet, which the tourist office describes as the highest point in the Tarn département. The village's name derives from the Occitan expression “Molin Magèr”, meaning “the large mill”.

Culture and History

At the southern entrance to the hamlet, the Statue-menhir de Rieuviel (2) has been preserved; it was carved from a block of diorite or rhyolite. The church of Notre-Dame de Moulin-Mage dates from 1836.

A road built by the Romans between Béziers and Cahors ran through the Moulin-Mage area. In Cabannes, the church of Saint-Hilaire dates from 1837. The Menhir du Vacant is considered an impressive relic of the Neolithic period.

Neolithic statue-menhirs in the region around Moulin-Mage bear witness to the first farming communities. The region around Moulin-Mage has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years.

Collection and Visits

The Musée de l’auto ancienne houses a private collection of around twenty cars from the 1920s to the 1970s. The collection also includes oil cans, enamel signs relating to automobiles, and old petrol station pumps. The Musée de l’auto ancienne can only be visited by prior appointment.
