Culture

The main construction phases of the Église Saint-André in Magrin date from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. On the south side, the sacristy has a vaulted fresco decoration from the 15th century featuring foliage as well as angels or musical amoretti. The 16th-century frescoes in the sacristy are the only surviving remnants of the frescoes that once covered the walls and the boarded roof structure of the Église Saint-André.

At the Château de Magrin, a pastel dryer is one of the few examples of its kind still preserved in good condition in the Midi toulousain. On the second floor, visitors can see a museum presenting the history of pastel in the Midi toulousain. In an adjoining tower, a pastel mill originating from a neighbouring municipality has been rebuilt.

The grounds of the Château de Magrin display pastel plants in rosette, flowering or seed stages, depending on the season. Basic dye plants, including shrub indigo, are also shown there. The grounds also include the old blue cart from the Lauragais, which explains why and how such carts have been painted blue since the Middle Ages. The Château de Magrin is considered a living centre of the “route historique du pastel” and stands at its origin.
