In Castres, the first Maisons sur l’Agout date back to the end of the 12th century. For centuries, the houses accommodated workshops belonging to tanners, tawers and parchment makers. They cannot be visited inside because they are inhabited.

Culture
The Jardin de l’Évêché has been classified as a Monument historique since 1995 and has held the “Jardin remarquable” designation since 2004. The garden’s plans are attributed to André Le Nôtre. The Centre national et musée Jean Jaurès presents a chronological and thematic tour of the life and work of Jean Jaurès.
Castres is located on the Way of St James, more precisely on the Via d’Arles; the route is marked there with its own signage.
Nature
Northeast of Castres, the Gourjade site covers 53 hectares and offers an extensive green and leisure area on the banks of the Agout. Gourjade has several paths for walking, running and cycling.
Paths and Water
The Chemin des Droits de l’Homme follows a former railway line from Castres via Lautrec to Albi.
The excursion boat Le Miredames carries passengers from the city centre to Parc de Gourjade and back along the Agout. From the landing stage in the city centre, it reaches Parc de Gourjade in around 20 minutes. On the return journey, Le Miredames offers views of Castres’ multicoloured wooden houses.
Museums
The Musée Goya is housed in a former 17th-century bishop’s palace. It contains the only collection in France devoted entirely to the art of the Iberian Peninsula from antiquity to the present day.
