Culture

The Musée du Cardinal Verdier is located in the crypt of the church. It presents Cardinal Verdier, who was born in Lacroix-Barrez and was Archbishop of Paris from 1929 to 1940. On display are the cardinal’s personal belongings, family memorabilia, letters, photographs, newspapers and documents; the museum also offers a guided tour with commentary.

The village of Valon bears the distinction “Site authentique et remarquable de l'Aveyron”. Its architectural heritage includes Sécadous, small huts used for drying chestnuts, heavy roofs made of slate slabs and dry-stone terraces. Valon can be explored on a walk along its only, ribbon-like street, with explanatory panels along the way.

The Château de Valon is a feudal castle from the 12th century that is open to visitors. The spiral staircase of the keep, built into the thickness of the walls in the 14th century, leads 25 metres higher to the terrace of the keep.

Landscape

A footbridge near Valon offers a viewpoint over the Saut du Chien waterfall, the Truyère and the village of Valon. The Plan d'eau de la Fage is home to rudd, perch, pumpkinseed sunfish, which are described as harmful, and stocked trout.

The “Aux portes de la Truyère” route runs around Lacroix-Barrez across the basalt plateau, which gradually slopes down into the Truyère gorges.

The “Les cimes du château de Valon” mountain bike route is a very difficult 20.3-kilometre circular route with 898 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of 3 hours and 20 minutes. It follows the Camin d'Olt along the Truyère and offers panoramas of the Truyère gorges and the Château de Valon.

The “Gorges de la Truyère et Valon” cycle route starts at Place du Cardinal Verdier in Lacroix-Barrez. It is difficult, 57.5 kilometres long, has 1,190 metres of ascent and a stated duration of five hours.

Quad Passion Aveyron offers outings lasting half a day, a full day, a weekend or according to individual arrangements. The activities include quad biking and off-road motorcycling outings using participants’ own vehicles or equipment throughout Carladez.

Agriculture

La ferme de Dilhac offers free visits to the organic farm by reservation. During a visit, the production techniques for dairy products, ice cream and charcuterie are explained; guests can also see the animals in their natural surroundings.

The Ferme pédagogique des Bornottes offers farm tours and educational workshops. These include hand-milking goats and cheese-making. The Ferme pédagogique des Bornottes also provides contact with more than one hundred animals.
