The Château de Taurines is a building dating from the 13th to 14th century, restored in 1982 in cooperation with the Compagnons du Devoir. Since 1985, it has hosted an exhibition of contemporary art every summer.
Culture
The hamlet of Taurines has Gallo-Roman origins and is particularly characterised by its medieval appearance. On a walk through Taurines, visitors can discover a Gallo-Roman altar and the former gateway to the château.
“Château en balade” is a signposted walk through the village of Taurines, with information panels about the exhibition’s history and the local sights.
The history of the mills is also part of the local heritage: the Moulin de Bontemps was the last mill still in operation until 1970. Between 1920 and 1940, five mills were still operating along the Céor.
Nature
The Roc de Miramont is situated at an altitude of 552 metres and offers a 360-degree view over the Ségala and the wooded valleys of the Viaur and its tributaries; on a clear day, the view extends as far as the Pyrenees.
There is a complete circular hiking trail around the Roc de Miramont. A signposted 1.5-hour hiking trail also starts at the Château de Taurines and is lined with scarecrows.
Further hiking trails from the Château de Taurines lead to the glass furnaces on the banks of the Viaur and the Céor. “Les randonnées du pas-sage” offers guided hikes with donkeys or ponies.
Regional cuisine
Ségali cuisine is rooted in nourishing peasant fare based on the resources, tastes and contemporary developments available at any given time. In the valleys of the Ségala, chestnuts formed the basis of the diet; Sécadous, or chestnut dryers, are a discreet reminder of this.
Geographical location
Centrès is about ten minutes from the N88, which connects Lyon and Toulouse.
