Rieucros: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

At Le Grès du Vent in Rieucros, Françoise Louste works with stoneware and porcelain, using glazes developed in her studio. Le Grès du Vent offers studio tours by prior arrangement; visitors should call to make sure that someone will be present.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Martin has a bell gable crowned with crenellations. However, its fortified appearance is purely decorative. An octagonal échauguette extension was added in the 1870s by bricking up the fourth opening of the bell gable.

The historic site of Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Beaulieu, the ruins of Château de Lafage and Cathédrale Saint-Antonin are located in the vicinity of Rieucros. Further afield in the region is Château de Foix.

During the Second World War, Rieucros was an active centre of the Resistance through figures such as Amouroux and Giret. A site near Bel-Air in Rieucros was designated as a parachute drop zone under the codename “Pamplemousse”. The brickworks and brick factory of Rieucros were among the most important in the region.

Nature

The lower course of the Douctouyre in the Natura 2000 site includes riparian woodland and wetlands serving as habitats under the Habitats Directive.

The summit of Pic des Monges is located near Rieucros. Further afield in the region are the summits of Cap de la Mounjo, Cap de Touron and Pic de l'Aspre.

Getting Around

The Voies vertes network uses the routes and structures of former railway lines that have been converted for this purpose. The former Moulin-Neuf–Pamiers railway line served a station in Rieucros.
