The Circuit de l'Eselbahn begins in Vilsberg, a hiking trail with historical significance. The moderately difficult circular route is 11.7 kilometres long; the stated duration is 3 hours and 45 minutes. The starting point is in the centre of Vilsberg, at the car park opposite the church. In places, the trail follows the route of a former metre-gauge railway that connected Lutzelbourg with Drulingen and transported hewn sandstone blocks from the quarries of Vilsberg and Hangviller to the Rhine–Marne Canal in Lutzelbourg.

History
A PDF file for the Vilsberg historical circular route is available to download. The first loop leads to the 19th-century Église Saint-Charles, built in 1827, as well as the remains of the former railway station. The circular route features explanatory panels in three languages. Its forest loop leads to a shooting range that is more than 150 years old.
Inside, the Église Saint-Charles features Rococo decorations and Rococo-style furnishings. A statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus also stands in Vilsberg near the so-called Brunnen Langen Brunnen.

A 3.8957-hectare biotope conservation zone extends across Vilsberg, with 1.5435 hectares, and Phalsbourg, with 2.3522 hectares. It protects the noteworthy protected plant species military orchid and field scabious.
