Nature and trails
Four signposted hiking trails pass through the town’s diverse natural areas. The Houdemont viewpoint offers panoramic views over the Métropole area and its surroundings as far as the Vosges massif. The orientation table at the Houdemont viewpoint was restored in 2019 by the municipality together with the Fondation Lotharingie.
The Fonteno rises in Houdemont and flows for 6.4 kilometres through Houdemont, Heillecourt and Jarville-la-Malgrange before flowing into the Meurthe. The Pré de la Source du Fonteno was renovated in 2023 to accommodate walkers using the hiking trails that pass through this area.
The arboretum’s educational trail allows visitors to observe a wide variety of tree species from all continents. Parc du Fonteno, also known as Parc aux oiseaux, lies below the Fonteno pond in a damp woodland. In Parc du Fonteno, nesting boxes provide local birds with shelter. Parc de la Ronchère was opened to the public in 1989.
In Houdemont’s municipal forest, Napoleonic boundary stones can be seen along the hillside paths. The Montauban site above the village of Houdemont offers panoramic views of the conurbation and the entire south of the Meurthe Valley. Circular route no. 14 „Sur les Traces des Leuques“ takes a detour to the Houdemont viewpoint and passes by Château de Montauban.
The hiking routes of the Métropole du Grand Nancy can be reached from Houdemont by public transport, namely bus or train.
Culture and history
The church of Houdemont was built in 1855 on the site of a former chapel. It houses a statue of Saint Goëric from the 16th century as well as a carved wooden pulpit from the 18th century, which came from Toul Cathedral.
A covered washhouse marks the centre of the village of Houdemont within a network of paved streets.
Traditions and events
The Salon du Vin et de la Gastronomie in Houdemont takes place every year on the first weekend in November at the Mancès sports complex. More than 30 exhibitors present culinary and oenological specialities there over three days.
The local tradition surrounding the Rouge Bonnet is kept alive in Houdemont through treasure hunts, processions and sporting events connected with the town’s water sources.
