Ambazac reveals its character at striking landscape viewpoints and along varied paths. At the foot of Mont Gerbassou, the Ambazac municipal forest covers around 60 hectares and provides space for recreation and leisure. On the edge of the municipality lies the Étang de Jonas, covering more than 20 hectares and offering an impressive view of the Monts d’Ambazac.

Nature and Trails

A footpath leads around the Étang de Jonas. The orienteering offering in Ambazac comprises three loops: on the Muret grounds, in the town centre and around the Étang de Jonas. The Circuit touristique – Anecdotes d’autrefois is an approximately 6-kilometre loop exploring Limousin traditions and anecdotes from Ambazac; alternatively, there is a 4-kilometre loop.

The Sentier du dolmen on the Base Uni’Vert Trail des Monts d’Ambazac follows a loop to the Dolmen de la Lieue, then passes through the forest and reaches more open landscapes around Puy Bertrand.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint-Antoine in Ambazac has foundations dating from the 12th century and was almost completely rebuilt after the Hundred Years’ War at the end of the 15th century. The church houses the Saint-Macaire reliquary, dating from the late 12th century, which is one of the largest surviving reliquaries of its period in France, made of engraved copper and champlevé enamel.

The Grange aux Moines is a building listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments and the only surviving remnant of the 12th-century Grandmont Abbey. Today, it hosts concerts, exhibitions and conferences.

Events and Photography

The Domaine de Muret is a former 35-hectare agricultural estate that has been converted into a leisure and accommodation centre. The Festi’zac festival, a two-day contemporary music festival in Ambazac, takes place on the Muret grounds in mid-September.

The Espace Izis is 15 minutes from Limoges and 7 minutes from exit 26 of the A20 motorway at La Crouzille. Located in the Museum of Mineralogy and Petrography in Ambazac, the Espace Izis is dedicated to Izis, an important representative of humanist photography and a reporter for Paris Match, and displays a reconstruction of his photographic laboratory.

Geographical Setting

The various landscape and cultural sites are therefore located both in the municipal forest and at the Étang de Jonas, as well as in the town centre and on the Muret grounds. Historic landmarks, event venues and paths to the Dolmen de la Lieue are among the specifically named sites in and around Ambazac.
