Nature

The Jardin de Bardot was created by Joseph Mas, known as Bardot, and his wife Maria as a terraced garden on the slopes of the Dordogne gorges. Today, it is protected and restored by the Conservatoire Régional des Espaces Naturels du Limousin; among other things, it can be reached via a short hiking trail. From the Jardin-de-Bardot path, you can reach the banks of the Dordogne by continuing straight ahead.

Along the Agaries stream are mill ruins, Étanchades and drying sheds from former chestnut groves. The Les Agaries route from the village of Nougein to the Pierre levée is equipped with information panels and presents the natural heritage and former human activities in the Dordogne gorges.

The Point de vue du Busatier viewpoint offers a remarkable view of the reservoir of the Barrage du Chastang and the steep, wooded slopes of the Dordogne gorges. Buse de granit is a granite sculpture of a bird of prey commemorating the remarkable diversity of the Dordogne gorges as a breeding habitat for birds of prey.

The Grotte des maquis is a simple rock shelter that was used as a hideout by several resistance movements in the Dordogne gorges during the Second World War.

Culture and history

The chapel in the village of Nougein, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, belonged to Aubazine and has been documented since as early as 1158. Around 1775, the chapel had fallen into disrepair; it was restored at the end of the 19th century.

The present-day Église Saint-Barthélémy was rebuilt in 1860. It has a portal in the Limousin style, windows with glass-concrete glazing and a bell tower that becomes octagonal in its upper section and is topped by a slate-covered spire.

The Tramways de la Corrèze, a metre-gauge railway, ran from Tulle to Ussel via Marcillac-la-Croisille for much of the 20th century.
