Geographical location
Corsavy belongs to the Massif du Canigou, which is designated as a type 2 continental ZNIEFF. The Massif du Canigó, on whose southern side Corsavy lies, has been classified as a Grand Site de France since 2012.
History and culture
At the entrance to Corsavy from the direction of Arles-sur-Tech stands the former Romanesque church of Sant Martà de CortsavÃ. The old Saint Martin Church is mentioned in a document dating from 1001 and was consecrated in 1159. The church in Corsavy contains the altarpiece of Saint Peter with nine paintings.
The Tour de Batère stands on the ridge descending from Canigó in the municipality of Corsavy, at an altitude of 1,450 m above the Roussillon plain. From the 11th to the 15th century, it formed part of a medieval military signalling system. Towards the end of the rule of the Kings of Majorca, the Tour de Batère was built around 1340 to strengthen the kingdom’s protection against the threat posed by the King of Aragon.
The Batère iron mines were among the oldest iron mines in France and were the last iron mines there to remain in operation. Exploitation of the Batère iron mines ceased in 1987.
Hiking and trails
The Corsavy stage of the Tour du Haut Vallespir GR®P runs from Batera to Sant Guillem. It is rated very difficult, is 17.5 km long and involves 1,138 m of ascent.
The La Tour de Corsavy hike is accessible year-round and is a family trail suitable for everyone as far as the signal. The La Tour de Corsavy walking trail offers extensive views of the village, Vallespir, the Albères and the sea.
The La Devesa hike starts in Léca, a hamlet 4 km beyond Corsavy on the D43 towards Batère. The La Devesa route runs in the shade at the foot of Tres Vents through extensive beech forests crossed by the Riuferrer and its tributaries.
The Tour des Canals de Leca is a panoramic hike along the Canals, which are considered small streams. Between Batère and the Col de la Cirère, the trail is marked with white-and-red GR10 signs.
The Chemin d’Enfer – Parcours du mineur de Batère à Rapaloum leads by mountain bike along a former railway line to the remains of the iron mines.
