The old town of Pézenas is classified as a protected historic sector. Molière and his troupe stayed in Pézenas between 1650 and 1656 and performed there under the protection of the Prince of Conti. Several sites preserve these cultural connections. The Musée de Vulliod Saint-Germain bears the French “Musée de France” label and houses the “Observatoire” armchair, which is associated with Molière’s visits to the barber Gély. The Hôtel de Nizas has been partially classified as a historic monument since 20 January 1944. The Collégiale Saint-Jean has been listed as a historic monument since 1935. The Musée-trésor de la Collégiale Saint-Jean de Pézenas presents sacred art objects from the 17th to the 19th century.
The “Les Pas de Molière” route also draws on the town’s theatrical history. It comprises 76 designated locations for footprints of theatrical figures. The route’s plaques on the Cours Jean Jaurès are installed every year during the “Festival Molière, le Théâtre dans ses éclats” festival. The Théâtre de Pézenas is an important venue for performances and artistic creations in Occitania.
During the carnival celebrations, the Poulain de Pézenas attracts large crowds every year.
Arts and Crafts and Museums
The Maison des Métiers d’Art presents unique pieces and small-series works by more than 100 craftspeople. At the same time, it is a venue for presenting and selling contemporary works and is dedicated to selling creations by 150 craftspeople.
The Musée International du Jouet houses a collection of 6,000 objects. It offers children two visitor games: an educational photo-based game for children aged three and over, and a multilingual quiz for older children. The Cap d’Agde Méditerranée Tourist Office offers various guided tours in Pézenas and the surrounding villages with a guide-conférencier.
Local Specialities
The Berlingot manufactory in Pézenas can be visited free of charge from the beginning of May to the end of October, Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m.; the tour lasts approximately 30 minutes.
Locally designated specialities include the pastries known as petits pâtés de Pézenas. They were filled with a sweet-and-savoury mixture of lamb, brown sugar and lemon.
