The Salaison River crosses Le Crès diagonally for almost 4 kilometres before flowing into the Étang de l'Or at the Cabanes du Salaison. The banks of the Salaison are accessible to families via small paths; the route to the Cabanes du Salaison is also suitable for experienced hikers. Starting from the large Serre Rond roundabout, the right bank of the Salaison can be explored on foot or by bicycle along a path and then a trail through the entire municipality of Le Crès.

The Lac du Crès “Jean-Marie Rouché” is 15 metres deep and covers 6 hectares. It is located in a 27-hectare recreational area that is open to everyone all year round, 365 days a year. The lake can be reached via footpaths, by bus 30 to the Combe Chaude stop, 700 metres away, and by tram line 2 to the Via Domitia stop, 2 kilometres away; there are also 10 kilometres of cycle paths.

Culture and history

The first building of the Saint-Martin church in Le Crès is documented as early as 1096. The church was destroyed in 1570 during the Wars of Religion and rebuilt from 1700 onwards. Its façade reveals three construction phases: the oldest central section, the 19th-century choir and the new 20th-century nave. Inside, among other things, there is a painting of the Vierge du Rosaire, restored in 2019.

The Agora in Le Crès offers a cultural programme featuring theatre, music, visual arts and object theatre.

The Musée Saharien has architecture inspired by a genuine Saharan bordj and is considered the only museum in Europe dedicated to the history and populations of the Sahara. The two-storey exhibition explores the exploration of the Sahara during the French presence, the lives of nomads, and numerous everyday objects and pieces of jewellery. The Musée Saharien also displays personal belongings of the researcher T. Monod, as well as a reconstruction of a horse-drawn cart used by the Garamantes, a people from southern Libya.

Local life

The market in Le Crès takes place every Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the car park of the Arènes on Rue des Pointes.

There are two types of winegrowers’ houses in the village of Le Crès: older houses with a rear courtyard and a former chai for winemaking, and newer, more modest houses with a courtyard open to the street, living quarters upstairs and a chai or wine cellar on the ground floor. During a walk, you can spot dates above the doors.
