The Massif de l’Escandorgue includes Avène and is listed as a type 2 continental ZNIEFF; the area is also designated under the Birds Directive (SPA) and includes a Regional Nature Park.
Lac des Monts d’Orb, also known as Lac d’Avène, is a 6 km-long artificial reservoir. Surrounded by forests, Lac des Monts d’Orb is used for fishing.
The La Plaine de Sadde circular trail alternates between chestnut groves, beech forests, spruce forests and meadows, as well as between wooded sections and open areas.
Montagne de Montmare is a mountain in the immediate vicinity of Avène. Puech de Lion, Mont Agut and Mont Trois Terres are mountains in the area surrounding Avène.
There is an information board at Peyreguille and an exceptional panorama of the wooded hills of Avène, Rode Basse and Truscas.
Hiking
The Peyreguille route passes the 12th-century Pont Vieux and then returns to the car park via a footbridge.
The Tour du Lac des Monts d’Orb forms part of the GR® de Pays Entre Deux Lacs Avène–Salagou.
In March 2026, the western section of the Tour du Lac des Monts d’Orb was closed until further notice as a result of Storm Nils in February 2026.
