Nature and Landscape

The Falaises de Landeyran cliffs in Causses-et-Veyran have been protected as a listed site by a decree dated 3 December 1947. Landeyran is also a publicly accessible geological outcrop in Causses-et-Veyran. In the nearby area, the Landeyran cliffs offer slightly more than 50 climbing routes rated from difficulty level 3 to 7c across two sectors. The climbing area at the Landeyran cliffs can be reached by passing through Causses-et-Veyran and then continuing for 2 kilometres in the direction of Saint-Nazaire-de-Ladarez.

The natural landscape includes the ZNIEFF Vallée de l’Orb, which covers 634.35 hectares and includes the municipality of Causses-et-Veyran. In this ZNIEFF, backwaters, former gravel pits, riparian forests and meadows are among the wetlands along the river.

Hiking

The Les Gourniès circular hiking trail is 13.2 kilometres long and is classified as moderately difficult. It has 180 metres of ascent and 180 metres of descent and leads through vineyards and small pine forests. Les Gourniès is less than a ten-minute walk from the “Causses-et-Veyran – Coopérative” bus stop.

The 50-kilometre Tour du Saint-Chinian au Faugères route includes a section from Causses-et-Veyran to Autignac.

Culture and History

The fortified village of Causses-et-Veyran forms a crescent north of the fortifications around the castle chapel. Within the fortifications, the houses lean against the surrounding wall or extend over the streets with arched gateways. The Prieuré Saint Server is one of the sights that can be visited.

In Rue des Forges, the forge of Causses-et-Veyran has been preserved in its original condition for two centuries. The forge showcases the blacksmith’s tools in order to bring the past back to life and pass on the knowledge of bygone years to today’s generations.

The “Deux piles” consist of cylindrical structures that presumably once supported an aqueduct. By decree dated 30 July 1963, the “Deux piles” were listed as a historic monument. The aqueduct is believed to have carried water from a spring on the western slope of a hill to an ancient villa in Veyran.

Wine

Borie La Vitarèle welcomes visitors to its cellar for a wine tasting, where they can learn about the estate’s working methods and the surrounding vineyards.
