Nature and Landscape
The Mont Haut summit is located in the area around Agonès. The mountains in the surrounding area also include Jumeaux de Sumène (2) and Jumeaux de Sumène (1); the Pic d'Anjeau summit is also nearby.
The Ruisseau de Lergue runs through Agonès, and the Gorges de l’Hérault border the village. The climb to the Croix de Saint-Micisse offers views of the Hérault River.
Culture and History
In the wider region around Agonès are Château Montvaillant and the Ancien château de l'Hom castle. The Église de Lauret church and the Église de Claret church are also located nearby.
The Church of Saint-Saturnin in Agonès was first mentioned around the 12th century in the cartulary of Maguelone as “de S. Saturni de Agonesio”. Of the small Romanesque church, the straight chancel bay and the semicircular apse, vaulted as a semi-dome, date from the 12th century and have been preserved. Inside, there is a Gallo-Roman inscription that probably dates from the 2nd century.
Activities
Agonès is a starting point for canoeing, climbing and hiking. From April to the end of September, Kayak Hérault offers canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals.
