Culture and History

The Oppidum of Ensérune is an archaeological site and a museum of the Centre des Monuments Nationaux. A visit to the archaeological site and museum of Ensérune presents the results of a century of archaeological excavations at an important Gallic settlement between Agde and Béziers.

Nissan’s third mill was built later, in the 18th century. The Tour de l’Horloge is the only surviving remnant of the medieval fortifications of Nissan-lez-Enserune.

The Sentier Jean-Pierre Albert begins at the car park of the medical centre opposite the Foyer rural. At an intersection, it leads 200 metres downhill towards the Chapelle Saint-Christol. The Balade sur les collines de Nissan is a marked route that begins at the car park of Stade Louis Espeluque in Nissan-lez-Enserune.

The tour through the Centre Ancien uses QR codes at the stops. They provide access to additional information about the places visited and the route between the stops.

Nature and Landscape

In the area of Nissan-lez-Enserune, the Natura 2000 site Collines d’Ensérune includes Mediterranean garrigue, dry grassland, and Aleppo pine forest; it also extends across the municipalities of Vendres and Lespignan. The Collines d’Ensérune provide habitats where reptiles, insects, and bats find refuge.

The Sentier “Tour du Télégraphe” offers views of the Aude plain, its estuary, the sea, and La Clape.

Cycling

The Oppidum of Ensérune and the archaeological museum are located near the cycle route along the Canal du Midi. The Ensérune monument bears the Accueil Vélo label. From the car park of the Ensérune Museum, it is a ten-minute walk to the entrance to the site.

Boucle numéro 22 is a 27-kilometre circular cycling route that includes Nissan-lez-Enserune.
