The protected Oppidum de Roque de Viou also extends into the municipality of Nages-et-Solorgues. Its early settlement phase dates from the 8th to the beginning of the 7th century BCE; later, a fortified settlement was built there around 380 to 360 BCE.

History

Around 290 to 280 BCE, the oppidum was abandoned in favor of the neighboring site of Nages. Between 25 BCE and 50 CE, it was partially resettled during the Gallo-Roman period. The oppidum is partly listed and partly classified under French heritage protection.

Archaeology and Religious Buildings

At the Fontaine du Ranquet, the remains of two Roman twin cisterns lie on the opposite side of the road, 15 meters away. Each of the two cisterns was 24.30 meters long and 4.60 meters wide. The Fontaine du Ranquet is a spring that flows year-round. A building named « Fontaine romaine » protects the spring. During the Gallic period from the 4th to the 1st century BCE, the spring initially supplied water to the inhabitants of the Oppidum de Roque de Viou in Saint-Dionisy and subsequently to the inhabitants of Nages.

The Oppidum des Castels is a 12-hectare Gallic site dating from the Late Iron Age. Four successive rings of fortifications, equipped with towers, protected a densely built, systematically planned settlement. The oppidum is one of the best-preserved pre-Roman sites in southern France.

The Catholic Church of Saint-Saturnin is a neo-Gothic building erected around 1840. The Protestant temple was originally a Romanesque Catholic church and was converted into a temple at the beginning of the 19th century.

Travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be considered separately when staying in a holiday apartment in Nages-et-Solorgues. Archaeological sites, religious buildings and trails represent different thematic focal points. This allows cultural visits and trails to be incorporated into personal planning as separate interests.

Trails and Landscape

The Balade Oppidum de Nages is a 6.93-kilometer circular hike starting and ending in Nages-et-Solorgues, offering views over the Vaunage plain. Local yellow trail markings and signs mark the route.

The different lengths and layouts provide two clear points of comparison for planning the day: the circular hike and the nature trail are separate types of route. The Sentier des Combes is a 4-kilometer nature trail winding through the undergrowth. It includes water-management structures, including a large drainage wall that continues to control excess water.
