Culture and History

The Musée La Dame de Caissargues presents a permanent exhibition on the Copper Age and displays a cast of the skeleton known as the “Dame de Caissargues”. The museum conveys the history of the Dame de Caissargues through an audio guide, games and lighting effects. Near the museum, the colonnades of the former Théâtre de Nîmes were reassembled in Caissargues; they are traditionally used for wedding photos.

The municipality bought the park and Château de Caissargues in 1954.

The church of Caissargues is in the Baroque style and was built in the 11th century. Count Raymond VI of Toulouse signed a treaty there in 1209. During the Wars of Religion, the church was destroyed in 1574 and subsequently left to decay.

Repair records from 1596, 1604 and 1612 attest to the great age of the dovecote of Caissargues. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the lords used pigeons to communicate and collected their droppings as fertiliser.

Events

The Nocturnes de Caissargues take place on Tuesdays in July, with evening concerts in the Parc municipal; the 2026 edition also featured another open-air cinema evening. The 2024 Féria de Caissargues included four days of bullfighting events in the arenas and on the streets. The Féria de Caissargues was held for the 59th time in 2024.

Landscape and Getting Around

Caissargues lies in the Vistre plain, in the canton of Vistrenque and the Costières area. The Aire de Caissargues on the A54 is a 35-hectare landscaped rest area with tree-lined paths and a 700-metre-long lawn.

Tram’bus route T4 connects Caissargues with Marguerittes via the centre of Nîmes and has been extended to the Chemin des Canaux in Caissargues. The T4 extension provides a direct connection from the new park-and-ride car park to the centre of Nîmes, with a journey time of 20 minutes.

Parks and Sport

The Parc municipal, a green space in Caissargues, has a five-metre-high climbing frame called “Toile d’araignée” as well as other play equipment for children.

The Complexe Philippe Lamour is a multisport facility where young people can participate in sports freely; the AS Caissargues Foot, Tennis and Boule d’Ivoire clubs train there. Le Bois des enfants is a park for walking and picnicking with some children’s play equipment. A Bi-Cross course is located on the Chemin de Bellecoste, directly next to Le Bois des enfants.
