Bernis: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Bernis stretches from the southern tip of the Nîmes hill country into the Vistrenque plain and across the Costières ridges. In the medieval village centre, the town preserves a plane-tree-shaded Circulade lined with bourgeois houses from the 19th century. The old village centre also includes a square 13th-century tower.
Culture and History
The Bernis heritage trail invites visitors to explore the town’s historical and architectural heritage. In the Church of Saint-André, the Romanesque nave and portal have been preserved. One of the nave’s transverse arches rests on a milestone bearing the name of Emperor Claudius.
The Protestant temple of Bernis was built according to plans by the architect Charles Durand between 1811 and 1827; its bell tower was added in 1847. The public washhouse in Bernis was inaugurated on 19 April 1896, and its access was permanently closed on 5 February 1996.
The Château “Castrum de Bernizes” replaced the “Villa Bernices” around the year 1000. It was built on an approximately medieval motte that can still be recognised today; at that time, the population sought protection behind its medieval fortifications.
Nature and Trails
The Bernis garrigue features botanical trails and reconstructed Capitelles. The municipality also names the “Balade du Vistre” as another place to discover; in the garrigue, visitors can also discover fauna, flora, reconstructed Capitelles and botanical trails. The Sentier des capitelles bernissoises is a 5-kilometre circular trail marked in yellow, with nine Capitelles.
Wine and Crafts
Bernis’s wine-growing history includes the “Les Vignerons de Bernis” cooperative, founded in 1939; its winery received the “Costières de Nîmes” AOC designation in 1986.
Le Mas des Genêts in Bernis is a modern, environmentally conscious agricultural business with a herd of spotted Alpine goats and its own cheese dairy. It produces AOP Pélardons as well as other goat’s milk products.
On 21 August 2026, TANGO bus route 11 connects Bernis and Milhaud La Poste with Gare Triaire in Nîmes; departures are indicated between 6:15 and 19:45.
