Peyremale: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Peyremale is a municipality in the Cévennes National Park. The vegetation in the forests of Peyremale is shaped mainly by maritime pines and chestnut trees.
Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Peyremale can consider the town as a destination in its own right.
Culture and History
The church of Peyremale was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 29 December 1981. A priory founded by Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Sauve probably commissioned the original Romanesque building of the church of Peyremale.
Several hamlets in Peyremale have their origins in the Middle Ages and, despite changes over the centuries, preserve evidence of traditional architecture. The Canal du Tourrel is a béal, a water channel that carries water from the Cèze above the town to the hamlets located along the river.
There are several well-preserved dolmens within the municipality of Peyremale. The Moulin de la Coste is also known as the Moulin du Malpas.
Hiking and Trails
The Col des 4 chemins is a challenging 11.9 km circular hike lasting five hours, beginning and ending at the roundabout in Peyremale. The route at the Col des 4 chemins follows a section of the GR® 44B and offers views of the Alps and Mont Ventoux.
It passes through former agricultural terraces where mulberry trees for silkworm farming, as well as grain and chestnuts, were cultivated. For the route at the Col des 4 chemins, the car park at the mairie at the entrance to Peyremale is recommended when arriving from Bessèges via the D17.
Stage 3 of the GR® de Pays Haute Vallée de la Cèze is a moderately difficult, 16.9 km hiking stage lasting six hours; Peyremale is one of the municipalities mentioned. One section of this stage passes through a chestnut grove towards Château d’eau du Serre.
A variant of the path for visiting the dolmen adds 3.5 km to the route and includes an additional 90 m of elevation gain. A variant with a loop via Elzière adds 1.4 km to the route.
