Bagard: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In northern Bagard, the landscape is shaped by garrigue crossed by ravines; in the south, cultivated fields alternate with garrigue.

The Bougerlan Massif in Bagard features parallel ridges and a steep, rocky section on its northern side; the massif reaches 390 metres. Its garrigue rises clearly above the plain and offers beautiful viewpoints.

History and Architectural Heritage

The village of Bagard was built within the enclosure of a castle that had belonged to the Templars of Alès. Among the surviving features are a round corner tower in the southwest and carved stone door lintels.

L'Hospitalet dates back to the Templars of Alès and later became a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of Jerusalem, the later Order of Malta. Today, L'Hospitalet operates as a guesthouse with guest rooms.

The Romanesque Church of Saint-Saturnin dates from the 12th century and was probably the former castle chapel. In 1702, it was set on fire by the Camisards.

Le Monac served as a leprosarium in the 13th century, became a monastery in the 18th century and was later converted into an agricultural holding.

Traces of the Past

During the Cévennes War, a battle took place at the Tour de Billot, where Cavalier's Camisards were surprised and decisively defeated by royal troops.

During the thousand-year period of Roman rule, there were numerous tile works and pottery workshops in the area of Bagard.

Several destroyed dolmens, or chamber tombs, have been identified in the garrigue of Bagard, including at Serre de la Cabane, Bougerlan and Blatiès; there are also tumuli, most of which have been emptied.

Regional Specialities

The Moulin du Mas Miger offers on-site tastings of regional olive oil. At Mas Lander, guided tastings of wines from IGP Cévennes are offered.

Those who have chosen Bagard as their destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment for their stay.
