Culture

The medieval Sainte-Cécile Chapel is located on the outskirts of Rivel. It was built before the time of the Cathars; its apse is considered a rare architectural feature that was spared during the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229).

The Church of Saint John the Baptist has an open-arched bell gable typical of the region. Its eastern façade formed part of a fortification. The manufacture of cowbells is also part of the village’s history: it was a speciality of Rivel, which is why the village was locally known as “Rivel des sonnailles”.

Paths and history

The Voie Verte is accessible on the outskirts of Rivel and follows the former railway line towards Lavelanet and Mirepoix. Its route along the former railway line between Bram and Lavelanet can be used on foot, on horseback and by bicycle. Along the Voie Verte, information panels and numerous exhibitions provide information about the area’s fruit-growing heritage and railway history.
