Culture and History

The Château de La Serpent is a large rectangular building whose eastern corners are flanked by two square towers. The first written references to the Château de La Serpent date back to the 13th century; the present château is said to have been rebuilt or restored from 1661 onward. The western portal, the courtyard of honour, and the façades and roofs of the Château de La Serpent were listed as a Monument historique by decree of 18 August 1986.

In the wider surrounding region of La Serpent are Château d'Usson as a château, Château de Baudrigue as a historical site, Abbaye Notre-Dame de Rieunette as an abbey, and Abbaye Sainte-Marie de Beaulieu as a historical site.

Landscape and Trails

The peaks of Pech Sarda, la Bruyère, and Saint-Pierre-le-Clair are located in the immediate surroundings of La Serpent. Roc du Buis is a peak in the area around La Serpent.

The “Roquetaillade-La Serpent” route offers views of the Corbières Massif and the foothills of Ariège. At the same time, it passes through the village of La Serpent and by its medieval château (Castrum), which was remodelled in the 16th century.

Wine and Local Connections

At the 2011 Toques et Clochers auction, wines from André Cavaillès of La Serpent were represented.

Visits and Discoveries

In October 2025, La Serpent offered a creative visitor experience at the Ferme expérimentale La Sauzède and the Low Tech Lab focused on sustainable low-tech technology, its principles, and its experimental garden.
