Aragon: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Aragon is situated on a rocky promontory at the end of a plateau, built in the shape of an amphitheatre and overlooking the Trapel and La Valette streams. Between dry-stone architecture, southern Gothic architecture and paths through the Mediterranean garrigue, the village combines striking landscapes with vivid cultural heritage.

Culture

The Espace Pierre Sèche et architecture rurale houses a covered exhibition spanning just under 60 m². A film about the construction of a dry-stone hut and the landscapes of Aragon is shown continuously there. The associated interpretation centre presents various forms of dry-stone architecture, including terraces, walls, huts, garenne and carretal.

The Église Sainte-Marie is a southern Gothic church built from 1300 onwards at the end of the castrum. Its painted roof decoration dates from the first quarter of the 14th century. The elements displayed on the walls have been classified as Monuments Historiques since 2001. The Château d'Aragon is also part of the village's history and is listed in the supplementary inventory of Monuments Historiques.

At the Hort del Riton, the Jardin du Curé, faithful reproductions of eleven disc-shaped stelae are displayed; they are thought to originate from Aragon's former cemetery.

Landscape

The Sentier botanique du vallon de la Valette passes through Mediterranean vegetation, past dry-stone shelters and a rock shelter known as the “baume aménagée”. The accompanying walking route is approximately 4.5 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The Sentier paysage de garrigue et pierre sèche runs across limestone plateaus covered with garrigue. These areas were cleared of stones for cultivation; the stones were used for dry-stone walls, enclosures and huts. The walking route is approximately 7 kilometres long and takes about three hours.

A travers la garrigue méditerranéenne offers panoramic views over the Aude Valley and the Pyrenees mountain range from Canigou to Pic du Midi.

Paths and activities

The Circuit VTT n°3 - Plateau et garrigue is an easy, family-friendly mountain biking loop through the garrigue around Aragon and the Ruisseau de la Valette.
